Who has directed the spirit of the Lord, or as his counselor has instructed him? Isaiah 40:13

O the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgements and how inscrutable his ways! Romans 11:33

Think about the teachers you have had in your life. There are teachers we had in school, perhaps relatives that taught us some skills for a trade or a craft, or friends that have taught us some life lessons. We remember those good teachers that taught us well. Probably also have memories of some that didn’t do a very good job. How do these good teachers learn to be good instructors? Is it just something they happen to know how to do? Not really, they in turn had teachers that instructed them. Classes where they learned subject matter and teaching skills to better share that knowledge. I know when getting ready to teach college students I took a couple of courses in teaching adult learners that were very helpful.

We humans need teachers and counselors to instruct us in what we need to know. So what about God?. Isaiah asks who was God’s teacher. Was there someone to direct the Lord’s spirit, or a counselor that instructed Him? Don’t think so. God comes first, He was here before the world and brought the world and everything in it into being. He didn’t have biology or art lessons to create the world and land and trees and animals.

God's wisdom and knowledge so far surpasses ours that we cannot understand it. Paul writes that God’s judgements are unsearchable. He is inscrutable. Merriam Webster defines inscrutable as “not readily investigated, interpreted, or understood -- MYSTERIOUS.”  That is what God is to many, not someone we can understand. Yet this God created us humans, and wants a personal relationship with us. As we approach Palm Sunday and Holy Week, we again remember just how great a God we have. One who sent His own Son to earth as one of us to be our Savior.

Lord of the universe, we praise you today for guiding us with your wisdom, through circumstances for which we never could prepare. Your knowledge of us is so wonderful. Forgive our lack of confidence in you. Spirit  of wisdom, we lay our al before you. Take us. Make us. Mold us. Use us to accomplish your holy purposes.  We pray in Jesus’ name.
