To you, O Lord, I call; my rock, do not refuse to hear me. Psalm 28:1
The centurion asked Jesus, “But only speak the word, and let my servant be healed.” Luke 7:7
Rocky is a name that many people have, mostly as a nickname. It conjures up an image of a strong person, one who is dependable. Maybe someone really good at sports, like boxing. One of our high school history teachers, also a football coach, was called Rocky. (of course Mr. Elton to us students) The image of a rock is of something that is very strong, and substantial. Something that will last a long time. There are over 30 Bible verses related to rocks. Psalm 28 refers to God as “my rock” a powerful metaphor for God as a source of strength, stability, and refuge, representing His unchanging nature and faithfulness.
Then we have the story about Jesus and the centurion, a person in need of someone strong and powerful. Imagine the faith of the centurion. Here he is a Roman soldier, in charge of 100 men, yet helpless to help his servant. He is respected by the Jewish leaders, even helped them build their synagogue. He has heard of Jesus, and sends some Jewish elders to ask for His help. Before Jesus can help, however, the centurion sends word that he is not worthy to even ask for this. Jesus says to His disciples that He has not seen such faith in all of Israel. When the elders return, they find that the servant is healed.
God truly is our strong rock, faithful, there in times of trouble and joy. Jesus is our rock of ages, always there from the creation of the world and throughout eternity.
Jesus, thank you for being our rock. Help us when we become anxious and afraid, just speak your word so that we can rest in peace and security. Instill in us the faith of the centurion. May we be reminded of how much you can accomplish with even a faint whisper of compassion. Amen.
