You shall go out in joy and be led back in peace. The mountains and the hills will break forth into shouts of joy before you, Isaiah 55:12

The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!” [Jesus said to them], “Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” Luke 10:17, 20

Joy – what a wonderful word and state of being. Joy is more than simple happiness. Often, we may be happy, but it can be a fleeting emotion. Joy on the other hand is persistent. As one definition puts it, happiness is fleeting but joy is in it for the long haul.+

In Isaiah, the prophet addresses those returning from exile in Babylon. They had been sad in exile, now the people would go out of Babylon joyfully, a joy they would have for the entire journey. They were returning to their land in peace. No more war and conflict, just going home. Even nature would rejoice; having the mountains and hills shout for joy sounds like a great way to travel home. Even nature is full of joy.

Similarly the disciples that were sent out return to Jesus with joy. They were sent out, In pairs, to bring the message to the people. They had success! They return praising the Lord, Jesus tells them that they can rejoice as their names are written heaven. Not just because they did something wonderful, but because of God’s grace.

As the song goes – I’ve got that joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart. Where? Down in my heart! A joy that persists no matter what may happen along our journey.

Lord of the journey, we are but travelers in this world below. Though we may walk far from earthly homes, we know that we always have a home with you in heaven. Guide us safely through our wanderings and welcome us upon our return with joy. Amen.
