“Solomon said, ‘Even heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you, much less this house that I have built.’”  1 Kings l8:27

“The hour is coming and is now here when the true worshipers will worship the father in spirit and truth.”  John 4:23

We know many hymns of praise for God’s amazing Earth – lofty mountain grandeur, rolling thunder, flowery meadow, flashing sea …

I have heard many say their greatest awe is the night sky … the vastness of the universe, countless stars, planets, the moon.  Explorers and travelers were guided by the sky.  I remember as a child we limited the sky.  We drew grass across the bottom of the paper, perhaps some flowers, people, pets.  Across the top of the paper, we drew a line and colored the space above blue – the sky.  This is where we imagined heaven would be, above the clouds, where Jesus ascended, where Elijah rode his chariot.

The space between grass and sky we left blank (perhaps just too much crayon!).  Of course, we know there is no “blank” between grass and sky.  It is all around us, the very air we breathe, where life happens.  God is not watching from above “a line”.  It seems sometimes we limit God to Sunday morning, but God is more than a Sunday sanctuary.  A lot happens between Sunday afternoon and Saturday evening.  God is happening here, breathing life into our spirits, all around us, to complete the picture.

Omnipresent God, [Where can I go from your spirit; where can I flee from your presence?]  May we never let go of the wonders that are all around us. Help us to not leave you behind a line, within walls, but to live in awe of your glory and grace, all around us, within us, every day.  Amen
