Do not fear; Zion, let not your hands be weak. The Lord your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save. Zephaniah 3:16-17 NKJV
Be merciful to those who doubt. Jude 22 NIV
Our verses today come from two books of the Bible that we don’t read very often. They are both short, so if you want to read an entire book, try either (or both) of them. They have similar themes of following God’s commands to avoid sinning and thus avoid judgment, along with the mercy of God. Zephaniah moves from pronouncing judgement on all nations, to proclaiming God’s saving grace for all. It’s especially addressed to the remnant of Israel but includes all nations.
Jude writes we should contend for the faith and stay faithful to God. he Christian’s life reflects that faith. But what about those who have trouble with this? Read one way, it looks like believe, always do the right thing and you will be fine. Obviously that doesn’t work for most of us much of the time. Even the most faithful believer can have doubts.
Jude tells us to show mercy to those with doubts, perhaps those who have listened to other voices who are unbelievers. We don’t just kick out doubters, tell them to straighten out and believe. We are to show mercy, talk with them, model our Christian faith. We don’t need to fear, and can be strong as God is in our midst – ready to be present in our lives, to support us, and show us His grace.
Lord God, who knows us all, we acknowledge that we know only a small part of ourselves and less of others. As we live in this sometimes shaky world, help us to walk by faith with confidence and trust. May we show to others the grace that you show to us. Strengthen us sojourners as we travel the paths you show us. Amen.
