“The Lord rewards everyone for his righteousness and his faithfulness.” 1 Samuel 26:23
“You need endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised.” Hebrews 10:36
Just what has God promised me? What is my reward?
There is a lot of anxiety over money. How much is it? Can we afford all that? Eggs? Gas? College? Enough for a safe, comfortable retirement? Many with lots of money fret about losing it. Some with less money, other cultures, are more hospitable and generous than those who have much.
I recall reading a while back that several multimillionaires made wills leaving their money to themselves. They planned to be cryogenically frozen, and brought back to life, rich. I wonder … Would they thaw out young and athletic, or in their condition at death, old with health issues? Did they plan to freeze families and friends or begin new relationships? Content or still fretting about money?
We do need money … for food, clothes, and shelter. We rightfully expect fair wages, a just reward for honest work. Money enables us to help others who have less, to support worthy causes, to provide for those who serve the work of God’s church. But God never promised us a lot of money, or a long (if intermittently frozen) life. “Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” (Luke 12:32) God gave us Easter. God’s promise and reward to us is grace.
Bountiful God, we give thanks for your many blessings. We pray that your Spirit will live in us and help us do your will, to live faithful and righteous lives, as willing servants in your kingdom on earth. By your grace, bring us into your eternal kingdom. Amen
