Would that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit on them! Numbers 11:29

You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. Acts 1:8

Prophets are commonly mentioned throughout the Bible. In general, they are people who get in direct contact with God and then deliver messages to the people. There are some major prophets like Isaiah and Jereimiah, and a dozen minor prophets like Joel and Amos. Then there are a number of individuals who also are prophets, such as Elijah and Elisha.

In Numbers, God tells Moses to pick out and appoint 70 elders to help with the work of leading the people. They will meet together in the tent of meeting outside the camp and God will put some of His spirit on them. Two don’t go into the tent, yet God still puts His Spirit on them, and  they are prophesying right there in the camp. A young man complains to Joshua who tells Moses to stop them. Moses response is our verse for today – he wishes that all could receive God’s spirit and be prophets.

Can everyone be a prophet? Do we need to be? In Acts the disciples are told to wait, not to go off on their own to spread the Gospel, but to be patient. Once the Holy Spirit comes on them, they will have power to communicate. We all know what happened at Pentecost – tongues of fire indicated that the Holy Spirit was given to them. We may not get such direct evidence of the Holy Spirit in our lives, but we can wait, and listen, and pay attention to God’s guidance through His Spirit.

Thank you Lord, for the gift of your Holy Spirit. Help us to trust that you Spirit is doing miraculous things in our world today. Help us to wait and to listen for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Call us to witness and participate in the miraculous beauty around us. Amen.
