“But you, O Lord, do not be far away!  O my help, come quickly to my aid.”  Psalm 22:19

“The power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal.”  Luke 5:17

It’s an old story.  A man was trapped on a roof as flood waters rose.  Someone stopped by in a boat to save him.  The man refused and said, “God will save me.”  Then a rescue helicopter dropped a rope.  The man again refused and shouted, “God will save me.”  The man drowned.  When he met God he asked, “God, I trusted you.  Why didn’t you save me?”  God answered, “Well, I sent you a boat and a helicopter.”

It can be hard to trust when we don’t see the results we expected …  and quickly.  We don’t recognize God’s help in the ordinary, especially when we aren’t cured or live a long life.  God may be speaking to us in the quiet listening of friends, kindness of strangers, and mysterious peace of mind through difficult times.

The very Son of God, coming to us as a little human baby, was not recognized as our Savior from sin.  We are told about some shepherds, some scholars from far away, and a jealous ruler, all aware of “something big”.  After that we aren’t told much about our Savior for many years.  Later, even as he changed water into wine and healed the sick, he lived humbly.  He just wasn’t what people expected.  We need help and all God sent was this baby, just some man, God’s very son, to be our Savior.

Dear God, Open our eyes to see you in the ordinary events of everyday … the wonders of nature, the presence of family and friends; our Savior in an otherwise, but not so, ordinary baby.  Amen
