Turn, O Lord, save my life; deliver me for the sake of your steadfast love. Psalm 6:4
God consoles us in our affliction, so that we may be able to console those who are in affliction with the consolation with which we ourselves are consoled by God. 2 Corinthians 1:4
All of us have difficulties in life. Some of what one suffers while going through a terribly stressful time can seem insurmountable . I read once that during such a time it helps to think that the only way one can possibly go is on to a better time. That’s pretty difficult when one is mired in the struggle. It may help to remember from the verse for today, “…we ourselves are consoled by God.” Sometimes God is the only consolation one feels; always, God is the only consolation one needs. Of course, the support of those surrounding the one who is suffering is valuable. God speaks through his children to spread the message of hope to one and all. The friend who just comes to listen and “be there;” the surprise phone call offering a kind word; the food and gifts arriving from loved ones; the surprise completion of yard work, cleaning, or snow removal; a helping hand with children who are in need of what a parent cannot give at that moment; etc. There are countless gifts of love that left one know that they are being consoled during the darkest of times.
Paul, in today’s verse from Corinthians, surely knew and felt the love of God as a consolation for him. Few suffered more than Paul did, because of his steadfast love and commitment to being a servant of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Paul’s commitment to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, helped Paul to proclaim the good news during the darkest times in his life. God reveals lessons during times of suffering. These lessons, as they did for Paul, can help us to show compassion and encouragement for others.
Dar Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,
O God, thank you that difficulties and afflictions do not have the final word in our lives. Forgive us when we miss the lessons you have for us. Grow within each one of us to sow compassion and love for others. Grant us grace and patience in adversity. Amen.
