Volunteer Tutors Needed for FMF Children

Dear hosting congregations,

Beacon is looking for volunteers with a passion for helping young people learn. The 13 learners (grades PK-11) in our shelter program, Families Moving Forward, are going to school remotely some or all the time. They and their parents welcome assistance to help students tackle school assignments, stay focused, and assist with school-related problem-solving.

This is a great opportunity for members of your congregation to volunteer and support families!

We’re looking for two or three volunteers to support the children in each of the four families in shelter. Volunteers will be asked to provide one-to-one tutoring support at least three days per week for at least seven hours per week through December. Tutoring sessions will be scheduled weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. We ask that volunteers have some flexibility in their schedules because family and school schedules can vary week-to week. Shelter staff will provide training and ongoing support for volunteers.

Tutors and learners will meet at Beacon’s Chaska program center, at the Bloomington hotel where families are staying, and/or online, depending on the learner’s needs. At the program center and hotel, health and safety protocols for sanitation are being followed and tutors and learners will be required to wear masks and maintain social distance.
